WALTZ WITH BASHIR

Animated Israeli film Waltz With Bashir, which was pretty overlooked at the Oscars, was treated rather better in France, winning the Best Foreign Film award in the usual venue of the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

The secret of Kells

superb movie, superb music

If you’re a fan of unique and alternative forms of 2D animation, you might be interested in an upcoming film from Ireland called The Secret of Kells. Developed by Cartoon Saloon (the makers of Skunk Fu!) with the help of production companies in France and Belgium, this feature-length film has a wonderfully fantastic look and feel to it.

Set during the 9th Century, the story follows a young boy named Brendan who lives alongside the monks in Kells Abbey monastery. Against the backdrop of frequent Viking raids, Brendan is drawn into the creation of the legendary Book of Kells, the illuminated text that was transcribed by Celtic monks during that time period. Buena Vista International will release the movie in Europe on March 6th, although a North American release date has not yet been set. (There’s actually a good chance it may never get released over here… hardcore animation hounds should start petitioning now!) Watch the trailer below, and for more info visit the official website or production blog.

Black Freighter

There’s a trailer up on YouTube for the animated DVD of the Tales of the Black Freighter, the comics-within-a-comic that the kid is reading on the street throughout the Watchmen, worth a quick look:

Cat Shit One

Motofumi Kobayashi's story of "real and fierce combat by cute and fluffy animals"

Japan's Studio Anima publicized its computer-animated adaptation of Motofumi Kobayashi's Cat Shit One manga at Tokyo International Anime Fair this week. ADV Manga released three volumes of the original Cat Shit One manga under the title Apocalypse Meow in North America. The manga follows three American soldiers — Bota, Perky and Rats — during the Vietnam War. The trio just happen to be cute animals in the Cat Shit One recon group.

The 12-episode anime series of "real and fierce combat by cute and fluffy animals" updates the manga's premise by making the three soldiers part of a modern private military company. In the first episode, the three attempt to rescue hostages, but end up surrounded by guerrillas demanding the withdrawal of United States Armed Forces in the area.
